City hires accountant to audit Logan Gas rate dispute

Athens city council authorized H R Allensworth, Columbus accountant and engineer, to audit Logan Gas Company books to determine a just natural gas rate for the city. He will assess revenue, expenses and reproductive costs, attend hearings and testify, with a $300 fee approved. Ordinances also approved bonds in anticipation of special assessments for Lorene avenue projects.

Mail carrier completes 320000 miles in 25 years service

Rural carrier A. K. Oliver retires after 25 years of duty covering mainly two wheeled carts. He estimates 320000 miles traveled, equaling about 15 trips around the world, during which he wore out ten or a dozen horses and as many vehicles. A planned home celebration was postponed due to his brother Daniel’s death.

Five Wells Drilled in Fisher Field and Others Planned Nearby

Oil activity rises in Athens county as five wells begin in the Fisher field and one on Athens State hospital lands per A. D. Townsend. Additional wells, totaling six or seven, are planned in the Fisher field, all targeting the Berea sand about 1150 feet deep. Columbus officials approve coal contracts for next year. The board of education awarded 15 000 tons of lump Ohio coal to Bell Coal Co at 4 24 a ton from Freeport docking mine Deanville Athens County. Athens County Commissioners Permit Post Service Expenses

The Athens county commission voted to allow up to 25 dollars annually for memorial post services in Athens Nelsonville Glust and Buchtel. Posts include G A R Spanish War Veterans and American Legion with some consolidations. They also ordered old newspaper files 1860 onward transferred to the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society for access or return.
