American seaplanes complete remarkable Atlantic flight

Washington May 17. The NC-4 reached Horta in the Azores after a 1,200 mile leg from Trepassey and set a world record with an 80 mph average on the first leg to Europe. Navy officials report NC-3 and NC-1 near the Azores amid fog and rain squalls as the mission nears Punta Delgada Lisbon and the goal.

Glouster O May 17 The Sunday Creek Coal company has taken over all properties of the Sunday Creek Coal company of New Jersey the Buckeye Coal and Railway company and the Ohio Land and Railway company. The Buckeye holdings include several hundred houses a large store two mines a hospital and theatre at San Toy. New tipples shaker screens and lording booms are being installed in the Sunday Creek Valley Corning Hemlock Buckingham Congo and Shawnee. Harry Furniss was elected land agent and John B Stiff was named manager of the stores.

First NC Plane Altered Before Trans Atlantic Flight

The NC-1, first of the giant Navy sea planes, has been greatly altered to gain speed and reduce power needs for takeoff. With NC-3, she completed the Rockaway Point to Trepassey Bay crossing without mishap.

Seaplane NC-1 and NC-4 logged movements from Trepassey to the Azores with takeoffs landings and waterings. Colum­bus Man Shoots Teen, Then Commits Suicide

In Columbus last night Charles Lindsay 71 shot Margaret White 17 then killed himself. The girl, who required medical care, says he attempted an attack when she entered his home to retrieve an umbrella she left there. Lindsay had been arrested last August on suspicion of murdering his housekeeper but was released.

Winnipeg May 17 noon The general strike of all workers here was expected to be complete this afternoon with telegraphers walking out cutting the city from outside communication. Men voted to leave their keys at noon Officials urged by S J Konenkamp Chicago president of the Commercial Telegraphers Union of America to remain at work. Railroad gatemen ticket sellers and baggage handlers stopped work today. Lines into the United States carried auditors and little delay was reported.

North Atlantic Hop Off Impresses Shore Crowds

At Trepassey Newfoundland on May 17 crowds watched as Commander Towers led three NC planes into the night sky. The NC 4 surged ahead from the V formation, heading east toward Plymouth while onshore reporters sailors and local officials waved goodbye.
