Rome Beauty Origin Tied to Stewart Area in Hocking Valley
The Rome Beauty apple's birthplace is traced to the Peter Finsterwald farm east of Stewart in Lawrence County with ties to Athens County where Judge Elijah Hatch’s Rome Township orchard produced the first Athens County Rome Beauty in fall 1825. The Hatch tree inspired nurserymen despite being pruned for grafting. Daniel Stewart’s early Ohio orchard influence and regional plantings shaped the historic apple line.
