Former Athens Police Chief Peter Finsterwald Dead at 76
Peter Finsterwald, longtime Athens police marshal and Civil War veteran, died at his home on Second Street at age 76 after a lengthy illness. He served as officer from 1881 to 1910, survived a 1901 gunfight in Gallipolis, and left a large family including survivors Emma Bing, Mary Crippen, and Beatrice Finsterwald. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 pm with burial in West Union cemetery.
