Mrs. W. T. Hobart, American Methodist missionary at Tsinan, was murdered by Chinese troops. The killing occurred April 29. reports reached Pekin on May 11 confirming the affair after earlier rumors. The American legation was advised of the incident.
Japanese expeditionary forces and Chinese nationalist units drive into Tsinan. About 2,000 Chiang Kai Shek troops flee the entrenchments after hours of resistance as Japanese planes and artillery tighten control. Chinese Chamber of Commerce mediation preceded the evacuation of the walled city.
At Spitzbergen on May 11 General Umberto Nobile with the Italia dirigible began a 40 hour flight toward Lenin's land at the North Pole. Reports say a Russian expedition may have departed from the Taimir peninsula and Nobile accelerated the start to beat them.
Shareholders of Citizens Trust and Savings Bank and First National Bank ratified the merger agreement with nearly unanimous votes. The First Citizens corporation shareholders also approved the capital increase necessary to complete participation in the merger. Enthusiasm ran high at both meetings with many stockholders voicing support.
Columbus May 11 The state tax commission will decide next week on Cedar Point resort valuation after members completed a survey of the property.
J L Good secretary of the Ohio Coal bureau denied that Lorain Coal & Dock and Rail River Coal contemplated opening mines in Belmont and Jefferson counties under the Jacksonville wage scale. He stated there is nothing to the report and the companies have never considered such a move.
The American Peace Society unveiled eight proposals for international harmony in Cleveland. They urge outlawing war, defend self defense, restrict aid to aggressors, reestablish a Central American court, foster universal conferences, promote student exchange, and require history economics and sociology in all schools.
Federal prohibition agents raided roadhouses in Kenton and Campbell counties Kentucky. More than 60 people were cited to appear as the cases were heard by a U S commission. Undercover agents and listening devices aided the investigations led from Louisville by W O Mays.

Alex M. Moore of Athens says the civic association has no comment yet on attacks by union officials at a miners mass meeting. He promises a future statement and asserts residents support for miners over critics, pledging help to workers in the Hocking valley strike.
Oslo dispatch reports the Italia left Kings Bay for the North Polar region at 7 45 a m amid official word of unconfirmed minoy technical troubles. The craft carried eighteen crew and faced bad weather, fogs, and gas supply issues as Nobile began the exploration series toward Lenin's Island and possibly the pole.
Two earthquake tremors struck Creede Colorado at 3:00 am and 3:20 am causing no damage. Shocks have rattled the area intermittently since Easter Sunday as residents reported.
Rumor spread in Athens claiming Lindbergh would visit Rowland field on Canaanville road at 11 this morning. Dozens sought details, hundreds gathered despite rain, but Peg Malone of Scotty's Plying circus announced no visit. He may meet Lt. Scott in Urichville next week.
In Wheeling West Virginia on May 11 a tip warned that Ohio county jail would be blown up by alleged Black Handers from New Cumberland to kill John Brandon and J A Brandon Jr two convicted bankers. Marshal Harry Weiss moved them to the federal prison at Atlanta by auto after they pleaded guilty to wrecking First National Bank of New Cumberland.
In Cincinnati on May 11 three sisters Agnes Bauer 45 Laura Bauer 48 and Alice Bauer 66 were forced from their home by a landlord and spent the night in a barn with their collie and cat. Police detained them at the city station while social welfare workers take charge amid funds shortages.
Executives from five northern railroads met in Washington and agreed to a voluntary 20c rate reduction on coal from Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. The plan, announced by Frank Barr, calls for filing with the Interstate Commerce Commission and sets June 16 to June 30 as the effective window. The action follows a prior 12c rate reduction and aims to restore a 46 to 48c differential over southern fields for lakes transportation to points west.
A late Portsmouth woman rushed to reach a bridge luncheon in Gallipolis. She called her son Coleman Grimes, city editor of the Portsmouth Times, who flew with her to Gallipolis to ensure timely arrival. The Grimes family is well known in Athena with Coleman having visited here many times.
Edward Donnenwirth of Seneca County, the oldest inmate at London Prison Farm serving a life term for first degree murder, received a conditional pardon requiring lifelong liquor abstinence. George Ellicott of Mansfield, serving twenty years at Mansfield Reformatory, was commuted due to serious tuberculosis illness and imminent danger of death.
John V. Best of Zanesville filed suit in the Ohio Supreme Court seeking a writ of mandamus to compel Secretary of State Clarence J. Brown to appoint him as Republican member of the Muskingum county board of elections for a two year term. Chief Justice Carrington T. Shall granted an alternative writ with return set for May 19, requiring Brown to show cause why Best should not be appointed. Best says the Republican executive committee recommended him as required by law, but Brown appointed Pearly Harrop.
Rockefeller, silent on calls for Robert W. Stewart to resign as chairman of Standard Oil of Indiana, was applauded by about 2,000 U S Chamber of Commerce members. Owen D Young introduced him as an exemplar of sound business. A Chicago statement from Stewart promised careful consideration, with no clear plan for a vote of confidence. Rockefeller declined further comment.
Walter Hagen today won the British Open at Sandwich, securing his third title with an aggregate score of 282. The American champion, who also held the US title, outplayed rivals on the Royal St George's course and accepted the cup from the Prince of Wales. Hagen had previously won the Open at Hoylake in 1924 and 1922, establishing a record of success in major championships.
The governor’s office requested the return to Belmont county of John Miens who is wanted in Bellaire for burglary and larceny. He is under arrest at Wheeling, West Virginia.
About 1 150 persons are affected by the permanent suspension of Mine No 8 at Corning. The mine located near Creek coal patty will be dismantled and abandoned immediately. W B Tytus, president of local business men, reports the 916 men employed will lose their jobs. The move follows pressure from local business interests and union concerns.
In Cleveland on May 1 a six hour day plan surfaces among railroad workers. Union leaders push for a 14 hour week and a 12 hour day as a later goal, while factions vow to back an amendment to limit work hours to twelve.
