Sevastopol is captured by the Soviet Army. Allied air forces and RAF raids hit Berlin, Paris suburbs, Genoa, Livorno, and targets across Belgium France and Luxembourg. British Lancasters strike Annecy. German losses mount as tanks and troops retreat.
Interior Secretary Ickes won broad backing to strike a house rider from the 86 million dollar Interior Department appropriation. The rider would cancel draft deferments for fit employees aged 18 to 30. Three Senate Appropriations subcommittee members oppose it as discriminatory to the department.
O. O. Raberding, a veteran attorney who received a medical Navy discharge last week, won the Republican nomination for Auglaize County prosecutor. In Cleveland, hog embargo goes into effect at the Union Stockyards, first in 20 years.
Dr Edward Isaac Stanley aged 69 longtime Athens Meigs and Vinton Counties physician died last evening at his Albany home after a heart attack. Funeral at Alexander Presbyterian Church Thursday at 3 pm with Rev Howard Warner. He was born in Pleasanton and practiced in Harrisonville before Albany relocation in 1905. He served on the Athens County Board of Health and belonged to several medical and fraternal groups. survived by wife Adelaide Cable three daughters and numerous relatives.
In Washington the House Republican Food Study Committee chair Jenkins of Ohio urged price officials to remove steaks and beef roasts from ration lists. He claimed meats could have been made point free last January and accused the administration of complicating food relief.
Emanuel Silva an electrician at the Hunter's Point shipyard was held for questioning in the death of Gunners Mate James P. Call Jr. 22 Nelsonville Ohio. Silva confessed to shooting Call with a .22 rifle following a tavern confrontation and later returned home unaware of the fatal outcome.
Sewell L. Avery resumes control of Montgomery Ward and Company Chicago after federal seizure ended. Secretary Jesse Jones ordered release following a CIO majority in a union election ending government possession tied to a protracted labor dispute. Roosevelt had said the election would end the case as Avery blamed a presidential misstatement.
In Charleston Circuit Judge Clarence W. Meadows led Rush D. Holt in the Democratic gubernatorial primary while the Republican race remained unsettled. Mayor D Boone Dawson trailed Raymond Funkhouser for the GOP nomination as nine of nineteen delegates favored Dewey for the presidency.

In Peters Town near the Virginia line a 34.46 carat white diamond with a greenish tint was uncovered by horse shoe pitcher Punch Jones and later authenticated by Virginia Tech geologist R J Holdren. George H. Bender, Cleveland Republican, won the largest vote total of any candidate in Ohio and secured renomination as congressman at large. Across both parties incumbents also posted strong margins while fifteen Republicans ran unopposed. With 6,651 precincts reporting, Bender led Hayden Edwards 11,004 to 58,495 for second place. William Reichle had 22,060.

Attorney General Biddle announced a federal grand jury in Denver returned an indictment charging three American born sisters of Japanese ancestry with treason for aiding two German soldiers to escape from a prisoner of war camp in Trinidad Colorado on October 16. The defendants are Tsuruko Wallace Florence Shioze Otani and Billie Shitara Tanigoshi, former California residents sent to the Granada relocation camp after Pearl Harbor.
