The Engineering and Mining Journal spotlights Hocking Valley Mine No 9 of New Pittsburgh Coal and Eclipse Mine No 3 of Johnson Coal as show operations with the latest gear. Pennsylvania Coal of Columbus builds brick shaft walls at Glouster No 23 to avert flood damage, while pumps drain water. W J Hamilton Coal of Columbus extends output by taking Gem Coal at Nelsonville and Minker Run and Silcott mines with major contracts in place.
Finsterwald and Slaughter announce a splendid vaudeville bill opening next week with the first show Monday evening and continuing through the week. The Athens program boasts the very best acts from the Keith circuit. Charles Sweeney and his mother Mrs Shields visited between trains, staying with Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Newsom on their return from Wellston.
Athens will host a new concrete garage along West Union Street near South Court Street. Albert Jones and Charles Mooney back the project, with construction let and starting immediately. The 65 by 36 foot building will house modern equipment including lathes and charging gear, with machines for rent and cyclers for hire.
A rainstorm halted a tight contest with Ohio leading Athens 1 to 0 after five innings. Thomas blasted a triple for Ohio and later scored on Rusell error. Gullum and Coleman split pitching duties for Ohio while Hagan shut down Athens in old style. Time 45 minutes. Umpire Carpenter.
The Episcopal church became a permanent organization on Wednesday at a meeting at Mrs. W. B. Bentley home with Rev. Buckland leading services. Officers include Convenor Mrs. J. M. Welch Secretary Miss Ida Bowser Treasurer Mrs. W. B. Bentley. plans to build a church and secure a suitable lot are discussed with Bishop Vincent showing interest.
The Hocking district sees a full restart of summer lake coal business as boats return to docks and mines operate full time. Managers predict the year will set a district record for lake tonnage if boats and cars stay plentiful.
Dr and Mrs J C Jones entertained at their home on South College street Wednesday evening at five handed pedro. Six tables were used in play and the rooms were festooned with dogwood sprigs and spring flowers. A two course buffet luncheon was served to a large party of guests and players.
Faun Adams captured a Bataurus lentiginosus known as the sun bittern on school grounds. The 23 inch bird fought robins before Adams took it to the university where Dr. Mercer identified it as a young sun bittern. It fled after a day in captivity amid robins in a daytime battle.
Miss Myra Beck comes back Wednesday from a several weeks visit with relatives and friends in McArthur. She will stay a few days with Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Millikan before continuing to Delaware to enter college.
Ohio congressman spoke at the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce declaring there will be an abatement of prosperity. He warned about economic risks and outlined measures to boost growth for the city and region.
Congressman Theodore Burton told the Cleveland retail merchants that they weathered the industrial shift with less consolidation due to close ties with customers. He warned prosperity may abate but cited demand for transportation improvements as a hopeful factor.
Five year old Vernon Ervin, son of Mr and Mrs George Ervin, was bitten by a neighbor's dog Wednesday morning while playing. The fang wound to the upper lip was not serious and no complications are expected. This is the same child previously bitten at Albany last summer and treated.
D. B. Smith of near Bartlett was kicked by a horse last week while closing the stable. He sustained several fractured ribs and head injuries but is considerably improved and on the road to recovery after returning from a drive at nine o clock.
Rev. George E. Fisher of the State Anti Saloon League visited Wednesday to confer with the local league and help organize for the local option contest on May 23.
Mr. John Lindley of Albany visited the city today for business purposes.
Paul Oppler of Berlin says a letter of credit on the Dresden bank of Berlin for 6000 marks and 126 dollars in U.S. money was stolen from a Big Four sleeper en route from Chicago to Cincinnati. Other valuable papers were taken and disappeared from under his mattress while he slept, according to his report to Cincinnati police.
Albany lodge No. 156 F. and A. M. hosted the annual inspection Tuesday evening led by Walton Parker inspector of the Seventeenth District. A large turnout including visitors from nearby Masonic bodies attended. Parker praised the lodge’s work and delivered an elogial address. An elaborate banquet followed the exercises and was enjoyed by all.
Mr. Frank Cole and Miss Sylvia Sayres of near Coolville were married Tuesday in the justice court of Henry Logan Esq. They will reside near Coolville.
