President Roosevelt summoned Secretary Frank Hines and other advisors to discuss a compromise on the bonus issue as the Senate weighs action. Aimed at steering the bill through, leaders weighed procedural steps while awaiting further talks and potential veto considerations.
In Toledo the United Auto Workers voted 1261 to 605 to reject Chevrolet's peace proposal and keep the strike, with about 2300 workers at the plant affected. Federal mediators planned talks with General Motors officials to resume bargaining as 33000 idle workers statewide were noted.
The Post Office Department presses its search for originators of the send a dime chain letters to determine if fraud is involved. Solicitor Carl A Crowley had ruled the letters illegal and unmailable, but officials admit little can be done to stop them since no law allows seizure of first class mail within the country.
In Columbus a 48 year old unemployed contractor Edward J. Eagan killed his 21 year old daughter in law Beulah Eagan and then fatally shot himself after a family quarrel. Coroner Edward E. Smith said Eagan was despondent over unemployment and opposed moves by his son Edward A. to relocate the family to a new house.
Mrs Alma Hullinger of Springfield was elected supreme worthy chaplain of the Supreme White Shrine of Jerusalem, announced Wednesday by the organization in Cleveland.
Middleport special report: Edward Steele age 69 died after falling from scaffolding while roofing a house. His son Clifford sustained a bruised leg. Edward died at Holzer Hospital after arrival at 2:30 pm Wednesday and death at 1:00 am Thursday. Survived by wife and three daughters Mia Ella Gardner Frances Rice and Mrs. R S Davis. Funeral planned in Middleport.
Republican opponents vow to block a bill redefining the TVA act after Senator Austin charged the agency with violations of law. He cited a large spending plan beyond borrowing authority and alleged abuses, unauthorized treasury demands, and overreach in appliance sales and plant construction.

Amelia Earhart returned to Newark New Jersey after a 2120 mile nonstop flight from Mexico. She described sleep as her objective after the long crossing and greeted a cheering crowd with oil-streaked face and cheerful waves. She flew 14 hours 22 minutes 50 seconds from takeoff to landing and survived a demanding cross continental leg.
Springfield threat of a hunger march grows after the Illinois House again rejects emergency passage of a sales tax raise from 2 to 3 percent. Gerry Allard of the Illinois Workers' Alliance says demonstrators will live in tents while pressing for funds to meet federal relief requirements amid 1.2 million unemployed.
President Roosevelt signed two resolutions welcoming Rear Admiral Richard Byrd the Antarctic explorer. Byrd returned with his expedition ships anchoring in the Potomac near Quantico Marine Base as Roosevelt planned to greet him at the Navy Yard Friday.

Five robbers in police uniforms robbed the Fici son General Electric West Taylor Street payroll plant in Chicago seizing 3800 dollars delivered for the payroll. Witnesses said the car bore the word police on the sides. Guards were outside when the gang gained entry claiming they were there to investigate a robbery.
A 48 aircraft navy patrol squadron departed Pearl Harbor on Thursday for a record 1324 mile flight to Midway Island signaling a major air link in the Pacific. Gates were closed, secrecy strict, as about 200 men prepared for roughly a month away in the effort to connect Pacific territories by air.
A Steubenville jury was to hear further arguments Thursday in the David Chioppene murder case. Chioppene is charged with stabbing Peter Pilati to death on February 10 in Amsterdam. Pilati's nine year old son William testified that Chioppene resented being called Popeye.

Ira H. Gilkey 90 died at his Fern Street home after months of ill health. He served in Company A-2 West Virginia Cavalry and was captured at Staunton taken to Libby Belle Isle and Salisbury prisons. Surviving children include Chariea Gallipolis Mary Dewitt Pomeroy John Goodman Athens Ira Jr Rhode Christina Harvey Athens and others. Funeral Saturday 2 pm Pilgrim Holiness Church with military rites at West Union Cemetery. Jagers Funeral Home to noon Saturday.
R S Wood an agent of the State Board of Liquor Control Enforcement was arrested in Toledo on charges of driving while intoxicated and assault after his car struck a curb and crushed Hattie Rounce on the sidewalk. Bond set at 1000 but not posted. Ohio Industrial Commission reports a 24 percent drop in industrial accidents from 1929 to 1933.
Ohio lawmakers approved a bill to outlaw alienation of affections, breach of promise, seduction and similar actions from lower courts. The measure, led by Rep. Blanche Hower and Rep. Alma Smith, would bar naming a correspond ent in divorce and alimony suits and faces Senate consideration.

Charles E F Coughlin addressed 24 508 supporters attacking the Federal Reserve System and the Eccles Banking Bill He criticized Senator Bulkley for backing Patman and warned of his political fate He also called Senator Wagner a traitor and said he would return to New York City May 22 to press his campaign against the government financial system.
Berea hosts the 1938 Ohio Association of College Treasurers gathering closing on the Ohio University campus. In Middletown three children died after a fire started by a gasoline can from Christine Barker and a burning attempt to play house. Owen McGuire and Dorene McGuire perished. Christine Barker and Claude McGuire suffered burns as bystanders tried to intervene.
