In Wayne West Virginia a freight train struck an automobile at Crum causing more than 12 hours of rail disruption. The vehicle skidded onto the tracks during heavy rain as the driver briefly stepped out for bearings before impact. S. Z. Kinstler identified the incident and noted 21 cars wrecked.

Ohio Bureau of Unemployment Compensation distributes letters and booklets to re employment committee members and selective service clerks explaining that World War II veterans who cannot find work after discharge may qualify for state unemployment benefits if they had at least 20 weeks of covered employment in the 15 months before induction or in the year after discharge. Benefits can begin after one week of unemployment, not the standard two weeks for civilians.
