Three inmates fled the Ohio Penitentiary and eluded capture after a midday escape near a river. Deputies and armed guards chased the trio through fields and undergrowth, with one officer injured. Authorities say the fugitives planned a payroll robbery at the Godman plant and hid along the river bank as they sought to cross the area.

Athens police arrested three men yesterday on intoxication charges. Each was arraigned before Mayor Len B. McCune and fined five dollars and costs after pleading guilty. Named defendants were Wilford Burnside and Neal Williams of Athens and James Carr of Philadelphia.

In Essen on May 4 Otto Christen aged 13 confessed to strangling his 15 year old schoolmate Fritz Walkenhorst in a sandpit over Walkenhorst’s Hitler Youth uniform. Christen admitted the deed and motive during questioning.
Ohio liquor director Col. Jobin A. Hughes announced 12 to 15 small town liquor stores will close this week. He would not name specific stores but said leases permit 0 day cancellation and operations will shift to a central community store. Mrs Myrtle Jackson aged 68 wife of Ode Jackson died at her Chauncey home this morning. Funeral services will be at Chauncey Church of Christ Thursday at 2 PM conducted by Rev G B Courtney. She leaves a husband two sons Albert and Andrew Chauncey two brothers John Schoonover and C A Schoonover Chauncey and one sister Dreibora Shaffer Beaumony.
