The Local Draft Board received a telegram ordering a May 25 quota of 125 whites, with a possible 25 percent extra if needed. A list of 175 potential inductees is provided, many deferred on agricultural grounds. those seeking deferments must file affidavits by 5 p.m. Wednesday May 15. The list includes Merle Washington Wemm and John P. Martin among numerous others from Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Millfield, and surrounding towns.
Brig. Gen. William L. Kenly, recently back from France, is placed in charge of the new division of military aeronautics in the U S fighting forces. He will train aviators and oversee aircraft after production.

The State Department of Health urges communities to back war efforts with strong public health work. It warns careless health administration endangers soldiers in cantonments and stresses strict sanitary enforcement to prevent outbreaks of scarlet fever diphtheria measles whooping cough infantile paralysis and meningitis.
The Red Cross surgical dressing rooms will open Thursday afternoon and evening for making muslin bandages. Ladies are asked to bring thimble needle and scissors. The usual Thursday and Friday sewing squads will not meet this week as sewing machines will be in use for bandage production.
Australian troops moved north of the Somme with two main advances east of Sailly Le Sec and west of Morlancourt. They struck a heavy bombardment feint, then pushed forward on both fronts despite intense MG and shrapnel fire. The battlefield was bright with sunshine as warplanes hovered overhead.
Paris reports intensified artillery duels on the Amiens front with the War Office saying German assaults were repulsed. Prisoners were taken west of Montdoucherie and in the Hangard En San terre Thennes region.
American artillery pounded German positions across Cantigny Courtemanche Fontaine Sous-Montdidier Mesnil St Georges and nearby roads and woods under heavy fire. The Cantigny Fraimincourt Wood was torn up by explosives as enemy supply trains came under shellfire and French planes hovered over the lines in improving weather.
General Haig said British troops advanced their lines between the Somme and the Ancre with minor gains and several prisoners. Artillery fire escalated on the Flanders front with increased activity near Locon Robecq Sun day and near St Julian. Australian forces extended gains over a mile on the southern Flanders front.
Washington May 8 report shows seventy five names including thirteen killed in action, three missing, two deaths from accident, three from disease, thirteen severely wounded and forty one slightly wounded. The Athens County Medical Society met last evening at Dr. T. A. Copeland's offices in the Athens National Bank Building. Dr. Sterling B. Taylor of Columbus spoke on rectal care, addressing many local physicians and noting attendees from Nelsonville Albany and New Marshfield.
Washington May 7 Appointment of C. H. White vice president of Clarkson Coal Mining Company Ohio and experience in coal shipping as manager of lake and Canadian coal distribution for the Fuel Department announced. Thomas R Brown Pittsburg named administrative engineer for the Fuel Department. C P Billings named special staff assistant. The appointments support a national fuel conservation program for power plants. At Lorain Captain James Normal Hall of Colfax Iowa missing since an aerial combat with three Americans and four German planes. Hall may have landed inside German lines and become a prisoner. the others returned. The German circus front line flyer unit said to be among the best. In Picardy six more Americans decorated with the Croix de Guerre Captain Sidney Graves Lieutenant Paul Daly Sergeants William B K Connell H R Webb and Privates E F Bennett J A Mindenhall.
Moscow on May 7 reports the Ukrainian government has sent a formal protest to Berlin demanding the recall of General Von Eichorn and German ambassador Von Schwarenstein. If not met, Kyiv says it will resign.
Corporal Chapin notes two new recruits at the local office in the Post Office Building. Everett R. McKibben from Zaleski R BD 1 joins the Coast Artillery and Arthur Erb from Monday enters the Field Artillery.
In Washington on May 7 leading automakers met with the War Industries Board to decide how much to curtail pleasure car output as steel shortages constrain the war effort. A fashion commentator notes that wartime scarcity limits what can be worn.
United Press report from May 8 notes 18 fresh or reformed German divisions totaling 218000 men identified on the Amiens front. The move suggests a resumed offensive while replacing first-line units that have suffered about 2000 to 3000 losses each, with prisoners confirming heavy French artillery losses before Amiens.
Hiram Vess was fined five dollars and costs by Squire Riley and sentenced to five days in jail for assault and battery on his wife. He remains in jail until payment. The wife had sworn out a peace warrant but the court dismissed it yesterday.
An examination is being conducted at the Post office to fill the vacancy in the Glouster postmastership. Glouster has a third class office and is under civil service. There are three applicants.
The Athens county district school staff met with County Superintendent Root to urge boards to finish textbook uniformity, abandon nonuniform exhibits at the county fair, and support a May 1 to October 10 thrift stamp drive led by the Vacation Thrift Committee. The Army School Sammies program offers capital prizes and military ranks for stamp sales, with thresholds from corporal to general.
Sir Rev. C. H. Doolittle departs Amesville tomorrow after months serving as Presbyterian pastor. He will assume a new charge at Laurelville and is noted for his church and patriotic community work in Athens county.
County assessors from various areas arrived Monday to review personal property valuations. The new method aims to cut costs by avoiding house visits, but last year some valuations were higher than expected and a few were raised after initial checks.
William Phillip Simms reports that German forces in France are massed for a new push. He notes about eighty divisions capable of renewed action, with twenty-five in reserve and twenty-five not yet engaged, while troops feel uncertainty about the coming offensive.
