Amsterdam May 7 The German press claims a resumption of the West front drive will be aided by a large offensive on the Italian front. They say the combined effort will bring longed-for German success and forecast the west front drive’s start.
The Allied guns for twenty four hours have strafed the Germans behind Arras as British forces press with raids and petty exploits. The movement of men and material toward Noyon is hindered by war terrain and May rains while infantry operations remain limited to raids.
Paris reports mutual artillery fire on both sides of the Avre. West of Hangard en Santerre American troops held the line as a German surprise attack failed. Our local operations there yielded prisoners.
American forces report heavy German gas shells unleashed in Picardy on May 6 after American gasings. Night bombardments followed as Americans hid in dugouts. Patrols bring in German prisoners nightly while troops grow wary of treacherous acts and boobytrapped advances.
Paris May 7 The Echo De Paris reports American troops continue to pour in and notes the entente bloc will be completed with the United States. It asserts German militarists cannot prevent this economic and strategic alignment during and after the war.
General Haig reports raiding activity near Neuville Vitasse three miles southeast of Arras. The operation yielded a few prisoners and three machine guns while causing only slight casualties to our troops.
Washington reports forty one names in today’s casualty list. Four are listed as killed in action aboard a U boat. The Tidewater’s gun crew commander said the ship’s captain chief engineer and crew were satisfied the incident was caused by enemy action.
Camp Sherman Ohio issued an order demanding utmost secrecy on troop movements. Selects and officers may not discuss departures even in letters home. Soldiers are told to write postcards stating arrival. mail will be held until transport arrival confirmation.
Workers in Austria-Hungary halted all labor on May Day and demanded an eight hour day. The event marked the first report of the planned European May Day demonstration being carried out. The walk out aimed to push electoral reforms and better food conditions.
Washington officials said President Wilsons army expansion rests on about 1 750 000 Class 1 combat ready men after deducting 233 000 called Saturday and that 700 000 more fit fighters will join from next months 21 year old registrations. The total pool near 2 500 000 ensures deferred classes need not be called. General Crowder announced a new call for 4060 civil engineers ordnance and quartermasters to recruit from all states except Arizona Delaware and Vermont with entrainment set for May 20.
Washington May 6 The Federal Trade Commission sustains the Supreme Court ruling in the American Graphophone Co decision. The order holds that manufacturers or wholesalers cannot fix the price at which retailers must sell certain articles.
Washington May 7 The House Military committee began an informal probe into aircraft production as it opened hearings on the War Department request for 1 032 billion dollars for allied needs. Secretary Baker General March acting chief of staff Director General Ryan of the aircraft production board and General Kenley Chief of Aeronautics General Squier and Colonel Deeds appeared.
United Columbus Ohio Sgt John Birmingham aged 29, after forty two months in Lorain county prison for burglary, was pardoned by the Governor today. He has enlisted in the British navy and leaves Wednesday for Canada. He is the ninth inmate to leave the prison for British service.
The May grand jury reported at 2 PM and was discharged by Judge Wood after reviewing 21 cases with 110 witnesses. Ten cases were dismissed and eleven were indicted including Koon for murder in the second degree and McWhorter for rape. Court adjourned until next Friday at 9 AM.
A French escapee told American officers in France about brutal treatment of U S prisoners in Hemelin camp in Germany. He described starvation thin soup and fish, beatings with rifle butts and bayonets, steam heated dark halls, bread and water, prolonged exposure to snow and frequent deaths.
Eleven crew members perished when the American steamer Tyler was torpedoed and sunk off the French coast on May 3. The vessel, formerly an Old Dominion Line freighter of 3,928 tons, was reported sunk in marine circles in New York on May 7.
In Coshocton Thomas M. Marshall 39 shot himself after returning from boat ride with wife and child, his son in Rainbow division cited as worry. In Dover Mrs Jenny Groff by hanging believed to be caused by concern over two sons serving in the army.

Washington has directed a new bureau division of law under William G. McAdoo to enforce federal theft laws on railroad property. Individuals stealing from cars stations or other railroad property will face federal indictments and up to ten years imprisonment.
County Commissioners met in the courthouse to discuss road petitions and bridge repairs in Lodi and Ames townships. They plan to hire a dog catcher today under the new dog tax law and consider a banquet invitation from Pomeroy Chamber of Commerce for inter county roads through Jerseyville with the West Virginia governor as guest.
