Athens county day June 14 leads a two day homecoming with committees, parades, and a giant Yalu monster exhibit. Cash prizes of 100 and 50 lure townships to field unique delegations while a free burgoo dinner and picnic fuel community participation.
Mrs. Charles Pidcock of Athens formerly Mrs. Calvin Oliver of Nelsonville received a $1540 draft from Aetna Insurance on the life of Calvin Oliver who was killed in a Utah railroad wreck. Oliver had changed his name to Phillip Huston and died in Evanston Wyoming. Roach, a Nelsonville acquaintance, exposed his identity, enabling the claim for the two minor children aged 15 and 12.
A widow and her two sons Fred and John Oliver in Nelsonville will share the deceased father’s accident insurance. The husband had estranged his wife a decade earlier and contributed little to support during his life.

The Athens city council met a brief session with Mayor Logan and eight members present. Reports covered the police fund receipts and sewer department staffing. no major actions were taken beyond approving an addition to Athens and several small bills.
Charles Davison Jr a young man last seen in Athens in March is missing. His grip was found in a river west of town near the railroad bridge leading investigators to consider drowning or foul play. Davison’s father offers $100 for any information on his son or his body.
Prospects rise as Marietta and Pittsburg parties lease territory near Plantsville. Drilling machines move to Mary H. Fawcett farm and A. L. Hoffman farm within a short distance, ready to operate. Local experts foresee nearby undeveloped fields turning profitable and anticipate several leases.
At a Fifth regiment Uniform Rank meeting Charles O Moore of Athens was elected colonel with Lee McDowell Nelsonville as lieutenant colonel and W J Lytle Logan as major. Resolutions honored late Colonel H B Moody. A transport committee for the St Louis exposition includes Moore McDowell and Williams. Athens company 54 members must report to Captain Oldsberry by May 15 to fix attendance and accommodations. The regiment includes companies at Athens Nelsonville Logan Glouster Chauncey Pleasant City Corning Murray City New Straitsville Shawnee Cambridge and Zanesville. The Athens County Medical Society held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday with about fifteen members present. Dr. J. T. Merwin reported on a disintegrating kidney and Dr. J. B. McDougall discussed measles. Attending physicians included V. G. Danford Trimble and E. F. Danford Gloucester. The group adjourned to meet May 7. J. B. Clayton returned from a business trip to Zanesville.

A wedding was solemnized at 8 o'clock last night in Millfield between Lewis W. Russell and Bess Dent at the Dent home. Rev Cheadle of Jacksonville officiated in a ceremony attended by immediate family and relatives followed by refreshments. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs R S Dent, is known in Athens where she attended the university. The groom is a son of Mr and Mrs L W Russell, formerly of Athens, now in the general mercantile business with Dent & Sell in Millfield.
The Wade and Company store in Millfield was entered by burglars through a window, about two dozen knives vanished, with no other articles disturbed. Investigators noted the break in occurred at night.
Mr McEndree, native of Virginia, joined the Fifth Virginia at the Civil War start, served with Stonewall Jackson, was captured and sent to mane then joined the Union Army till war’s end. He later lived in Ohio and spent a year on the Dakotan frontier. The Pallas club annual meeting elected officers for the coming year and a Welsh historical sketch was read before adjournment.
