Athens faces a proposed $19.7 million state highway bypass to ease internal traffic. The plan, long debated, drew favorable reaction from local organizations at a public hearing last November, with state officials pledging its potential impact on the city’s main traffic problem.
Athens residents form Athens Citizens for Intelligent Road Routing, Inc., with petitions exceeding 1000 signatures to oppose a Route 33 bypass segment in north Athens. A second public hearing May 8 will discuss changing the route, moved to the county fairgrounds to accommodate a larger turnout, while remaining bypass phases wind through ongoing state plans linking Route 33, Route 682, and the Appalachian Highway to relieve downtown congestion.
The city invites bids to demolish a house and garage at 45 Richland Ave to clear space for a fire department sub station. Bid blanks available in Service Safety Director Dwight Robinsons office. Bids open at noon May 10. No bids received previously.
State officials outline a multiyear Ath ens system project totaling about 24.8 million including Athens Albany sections. Federal and Appalachia funds finance the effort with completion targeted in two to three years for the overall route and one year for initial segments. Route 33 bypasses to start, then Route 50 relocation east of the city.
