Athens City Council approves amendment to share costs for street repaving. City will cover 80 percent of project costs with funding sourced from municipal accounts and state aid. Local businesses and residents anticipate traffic detours and disruption during daytime and night hours.
Athens city council adopted an amendment to fund East State Street re paving with brick on a concrete base and a 80 percent city share 20 percent property owner share switching from asphalt. Discussion highlighted city debt and future bond capacity amid bids from Fred Beckler for brick concrete at about 36000.
The new home candy making guide covers 144 candies with tried and tested recipes. It claims no special equipment is needed and includes fudges, taffy, pine nuts, chocolates, bonbons, carmels, nougats, and other sweets for the average kitchen. Five women will lunch in a plane 3,000 feet above Washington today as part of the All American aircraft display at Bolling field. Guests include Baroness von Andern Mrs Benjamin Cain Jr Miss Hazel Viest and Mrs Harvey B Durwell. The luncheon, conceived by Mrs Henry A Herliner, aims to be served in the clouds once the plane reaches altitude with meals safeguarded by steady piloting.
In Fairmont West Virginia rescuers fought through fire and toxic gas to reach entombed miners after an explosion at the Everettsville mine. The death toll rose to at least twenty four with seventy six missing and seventy in the shaft awaiting rescue as authorities directed efforts.
An inquest will be held in Los Angeles into the death of A J Daugherty a Somerset Ohio student aviator shot by immigration inspectors chasing alleged smugglers. Seven other aviators were detained as authorities sought Chinese believed carried from Tijuana.
At a 3 pm assembly in the Athens High School auditorium Coach Harold E Wise and Principal F E Harshman awarded small gold basketball and football trophies to senior lettermen. John Sprague Fred Mansfield Herrold Morgan won both items. Lawrence Hayes Harold Linscott Phil Ong Raymond Sheppard John Alden won footballs. Wayne Evans Elmer Norriss won basketballs. John Hill Don Roush, reserve letters, received gold block As. Wise commended the athletes on their careers and future success.
Emergency Officer George Haley found Raymond Jenkins with a revolver after a daylight burglary at the home of A. B. Stewalt in Suringfield. Jenkins admitted the break-in before officers Moody and Haley disarmed him.
Sixty mothers and daughters attended a tea in the Athens high school library Saturday afternoon. Yellow calendulas and candles decorated the space while Virgene McAdoo, Elizabeth Edmundson, and Margaret Atkinson provided music. Olive Carpenter welcomed guests as Mrs Bing, Mrs Price, and Miss Connett spoke, with Marguerite Wood and Louise Pavey coordinating tea service.
After a week of nightly contests between freshmen and sophomores at an Ohio university, seventy five first year reps pulled to victory across the pond. The win sparked a snake-dance along Court street and a late bonfire celebration near the tennis courts where the freshmen burned their green caps for the year.
John Patterson was elected to a fourth consecutive year as superintendent of Athens city schools at a board of education meeting. A veteran Ohio teacher since 1903, he came from Bucyrus in 1924 and is a St. Clairsville native with a master’s from Columbia. He has taught in Amherst Xenia and Bucyrus and has held summer posts at Kent Normal, the University of Missouri, and other institutions. Patterson is a Phi Delta Kappa member, Mason, Elk, Rotarian, and Presbyterian elder.
Vicksburg Mississippi May 3 United Press reports the worst Louisiana flood threat as levee breaches near Vicksburg could flood 14 to 28 feet below river level. Officials warn 200000 refugees may swell the homeless ranks with Red Cross figures pegging patients in six states at about 250000.
Athens county district advisory council met Monday in the city of Athens to reelect the county health board. George Rose was elected five year term president, P. R. McLaughlin four years, E. I. Stanley three years, Walter Whitlock two years, and C. H. Bryson one year.
Alpha Iota and Phi Mu Alpha present a musical program tonight in Ewing Hall as part of Music Week. Josephine Marshall and several other students plus group performances will participate. No admission charge.
Real Circus Fan Washington May 3. Mrs Calvin Coolidge, a dyed in the wool fan, will attend the circus this afternoon despite the president’s inability to accept an invitation. The opening yesterday drew 18 000 spectators including embassy and legation representatives.
Major General Edgar Jadwin, chief of army engineers, after inspecting the flood area, said about 150 million dollars should be spent over ten years to raise strategic levees five feet above high water mark to prevent a repeat of the Mississippi flood catastrophe.
Vicksburg with over 18 000 residents and 13 000 refugees in camps plans to care for 10 000 more flood victims. Relief workers see a hopeful note as deaths and major disease epidemics are not rising. Estimated dead nationwide about 350 as the inundated area nears 18 000 square miles.
President Calvin Coolidge will address the United States Chamber of Commerce convention at a banquet for Pan American Conference delegates. His remarks will be broadcast on WRC and more than 30 stations starting at 9:00 p m Eastern Standard Time. John B O'Leary will welcome attendees and outline the chamber's activities.
A spectacular fire in Springfield on May 3 caused by sun rays through a window igniting fertilizer bags on the fourth floor of the Vulcan Hardware building. The blaze inflicted about 5000 dollars in damage to the stock and building.
Superintendent John Patterson was re elected by the Athens board of education for a fourth year. The board affirmed sixty four teaching appointments and awarded contracts for remodeling and rewiring. Contracts include converting a study hall into classrooms for 1430 dollars and installing a new electric sub station for 1050 dollars with rewiring for 1145 dollars.
Dr J M Higgins city and county health commissioner of Athens joins eleven volunteers to assist flooded regions of the South. Other volunteers include Dr G E French Elyria and Dr C A Neal Cincinnati with two assistants from Rollin F MacDowell Cleveland. Directors Van Orsdall and Tate report assignment in Arkansas.
Dr Edwin Watts Chubb, born August 25 1865 in Lebanon Pennsylvania, rose from local schooling to Lafayette College and Berlin study to become dean of Ohio University College of Liberal Arts and head of English. He married Eve C Downe and has two children Catharine and Edwin. He taught at Schuylkill Seminary California State Normal and Platteville State Normal before joining Ohio University in 1900. He became dean in 1907.
Louisiana endures Mississippi River crest driving thousands from lowlands to high ground as evacuations spread from St Bernard to Plaquemine and Bunkie while relief efforts coordinate in Baton Rouge under Gov Parker and coast guard and navy support the effort.
Lucille Stevenson 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs J Stevenson, vanished after visiting Logan with her mother Saturday. They planned to return by 6 pm but the girl reportedly told her mother she would go to aunt for lunch and did not return. At 11 pm she was seen at Court Park restaurant. officers have been unable to locate her.
Twenty four junior department ninth grade boys at Athens High School completed 28 bird houses in a manual training shop contest led by J. C. Glover. Prizes honored top three entries during yesterday’s assembly. Donald Tot won a hand saw, George Shaukis a carpenter’s aid, Wilbert Slat earned a three quarter inch chisel.
