The draft program discusses an income tax rate of one half to one percent and adds gross earned income from all excise taxes to fund a state school fund. Columbus May 1 Harry Mulbarger president of Buckeye Janitors Supply and Cleaning Co was fined 18 and sentenced to 30 days in county jail after pleading guilty to submitting a false payroll report to the state industrial commission The indictment charged the company listed most employees as office workers to dodge a large state payment.
Manila May 1 The Philippine Legislature unanimously accepted the Tydings McDuffie freedom plan, the first formal step toward independence, with enthusiastic cheers from spectators as the vote was announced.
Covington Kentucky May 11 Miss Margaret Shirley 19 of Covington despondent leaped into the Ohio River from the center of the suspension bridge ending her life last night authorities reported.

The missing 60 year old Wesley Pyke was found dead with a head wound in a wood near his sister’s home north of McArthur Ohio. Officials believe he was slain and robbed and the $300 he carried is missing. William Pyke his 36 year old nephew is jailed in Vinton County. Ruth Miller remains missing.

F E Dowler announces 378 grocers in Athens, Hocking, Vinton, and Meigs Counties must pay 1 per employed person for Blue Eagle posters. 60 cents retained locally, 15 cents to state, 25 to national authorities. Nonpayment risks loss of benefits, Eagle, and legal action. Complaints may be written to the secretary.

A dwelling two miles east of Clarka Chapel in Canaan Township burned Sunday afternoon in a blaze of undetermined origin. The tenant was away, and the house was found in flames upon discovery. The home formerly belonged to the David Phillipe homestead.

A posse of over 50 armed men encircles hills and swamps near Wills Creek seeking three Ohio Penitentiary escapees. They entered mines and brushy areas after a gun battle near the town. Sheriff Jay Abbott and Police Chief Ray Daling lead the search predicting a showdown if fugitives elude daytime capture.
Rufus Deeds and two accomplices, prisoners who fled Ohio Penitentiary, were chased near Coneville as a gun battle erupted with a posse. Deeds was wounded by Gallipolis officers and later returned to prison after being captured in Lawrence County. The pursuit involved local residents, highway patrols, and the suspension of three penitentiary staff members tied to the escape.
