Albert E. Sanders 23 died after a shaft accident at Scarbro West Virginia. Two co workers perished instantly when a tub fell from a trestle and Sanders was struck while directing timber placement. Funeral services were held at Union Church Millfield with brothers acting as pallbearers. The death marks the fourth fatality in the shaft sinking.

Cornerstone laid for First Presbyterian Church at Athens
The cornerstone of the First Presbyterian church in Athens was laid Thursday in a ceremony witnessed by about fifteen hundred people. Schools closed and hundreds gathered as Rev. G Walton King led the service with hymns, prayers, and an address by Rev. J L McNair. The granite stone weighs 825 pounds with a copper box containing church records and local publications. completion is expected by September with a project cost of $22,000.

Fire damages Jennings residence on East Union Street
Fire damaged a room in Mrs. D. E. M. Jennings house on East Union Street Friday night about 9. A passerby alerted residents after seeing a curtain blown into a lighted gas jet. Damage to furniture carpets and curtains totaled fifty to sixty dollars. The incident narrowly avoided total loss to the Jennings home occupied by Mrs. Jennings her son Ralph Miss Ida Bowser and the Higgins family.

Man shoots at rival in alley over illicit affair
Reuben Glick was arrested on shooting with intent to kill after a confrontation with Nockles in the rear alley of Home Furnishing Co. Nockles and Mrs. Glick faced separate adultery penalties. Glick was discharged for self defense. Nockles and Mrs. Mann’s lodgings involved the affair.

Tragic Broadwell shooting shocks town
William Goins killed Fred Whitfield with a 32 caliber revolver in Broadwell after a drunken afternoon melee at Joe Mas home. Whitfield, a boarder with a known feud, died instantly at the scene. Goins, taken to Athens jail, showed confusion then calmness, later realizing possible life imprisonment.

Christist Church to Burn Mortgage and Re dedicate Service

Leg Injury Ends Drive Near Athens
Arthur Sayre son of Mr and Mrs E D Sayre suffered a serious fracture when his left leg was caught in a carriage wheel while riding near Ackley farm south of Athens. He was walking beside the carriage and the coat caught in the wheel causing the leg to break. The injury is serious but improving with no expected permanent damage.

Seek New Brick Plant Site In West Virginia
Henry O Blessess and Dr W N Alderman visited Parkersburg on Friday in search of a shale bed to supply a brick plant and paving block material. They toured suburbs but did not find the right shale and plan to return soon to inspect another deposit believed to meet requirements. If successful the project would establish the largest shale brick plant in West Virginia.
