Two workshops for teachers on gifted education hosted by Kent State University June 19 to July 22 and Bowling Green University July 31 to August 18. Sponsored by the Division of Special Education with both universities.
Services at the New Straitsville Methodist Church include a Communion service Thursday at 7 30 p m a Good Friday service from 2 to 3 p m and an Eastern sunrise service at 5 30 a m Several local residents and families are noted visiting relatives or announcing births including a March 21 birth of Yana Lynn to Mr and Mrs Robert Slatzer at Newark City Hospital with grandparents listed.
Bashan Carmel Sunday School reports 46 in attendance and 13.94 collected. Don Pierce and Mary Circle visit Athens. 4-H Club at Jim Donley's with 12 members elects officers. A busy week includes visits by Circle families and trips to Gallipolis and Parkersburg.
McARTHUR Charles A. King 36 of Marietta Route 3 a truck driver was fined 15 dollars and costs by County Judge G E Sharp for operating his truck at speeds excessive for conditions. He was arrested by the highway patrol after his tractor trailer went off the road into a ditch on Route 50 west of Mc Arthur. King said the pre cast concrete load was damaged to 5000 dollars and the tractor and trailer to 3000 dollars.
Rain fell four days last week at Vinton Furnace experimental forest station for a 1961 total of 8.61 inches, vs 6.38 inches year earlier. Week's average high 50, low 39. Sunday highs reached the 70s before cooling early in the week.
Athens High School students in eighth grade tested for seven fitness events and scored above national averages. Tests included situps pullups standing broad jump and shuttle run with results for 13 and 14 year olds showing higher averages than national figures. Ohio University student teachers assisted with the assessments.
