In Greenwood Mississippi plans to march on the courthouse to renew a voter registration drive amid tensions from past violence. Three crosses draped in burlap burned Tuesday night signaling ongoing civil rights protests in a 23 000 population city with a large African American majority.
Jacksonville sees flames and gunfire in Negro districts for a second night as racial violence escalates. Police say more than 100 arrests, 74 new docketed charges, and multiple firebombs, gunshots, and vandalism incidents drained the city’s security forces.
A storm system moving from the West brings heavy rain and snow across the Midwest and into the East. Hazardous driving warnings cover south central and eastern Kansas, northern Missouri, southeastern Iowa and west central Illinois as arctic air clashes with Gulf winds.

Gusty winds and low humidity sparked 13 fires across District 4 burning 66.5 acres. The largest blaze, 25 acres, was in Rome Two Athens County. Other fires occurred in Trimble Township and multiple townships across Perry, Jackson, Vinton, Wilkesville, Meigs, Washington, Monroe, and Fairfield counties with acreages ranging from one to 20 acres.
