Nixon says Laos action assures troop withdrawals from Vietnam

President Nixon in a wide ranging television interview urged Congress to back revenue sharing and reform measures while asserting Laos operations will guarantee a monthly withdrawal of at least 12,500 troops from South Vietnam. He said the danger to remaining American forces has been substantially reduced and hinted at a second term in 1972.

North Vietnamese Attacks Hit U.S. Posts in Laos and Vietnam

North Vietnamese forces intensified assaults on U.S. and South Vietnamese outposts in the Laos border area and northwest South Vietnam. The U.S. reported seven Americans killed and 40 wounded as mortars rockets and sappers struck Khe Sanh and eight other sites. Two U.S. jet fighters were shot down and 7,000 more South Vietnamese troops crossed into Laos as Saigon withdraws from the trail-cutting campaign.

Brian Faulkner, 50, a moderate, won the Protestant Unionist Party leadership in Northern Ireland by 26 to 4 over William Craig. Craig warned of possible internment camps for suspected IRA terrorists as leadership battles followed Prime Minister Chichester-Clark's resignation amid British pressure on security policy. Carson and wife settle amicably after separation
