Manners Say Thanks Quietly When Friends Help
When a friend does you a favor or service it is better to express gratitude with a simple phrase such as How nice of you rather than protest You shouldn t have done it The latter makes the giver defend the action and dampens the goodwill by turning thanks into a rebuke Show your pleasure and avoid refusals to preserve cordiality and reciprocity.
Lessons in Bridge by Oswald Jacoby analysis of a diamond slam
South defeats a diamond opening lead by cashing the ace of diamonds and ruffing with the North hand then run clubs to 12 tricks. West erred by not selecting the killing opening lead, and the bidding suggested to preserve diamond tricks or switch plans. The column urges listening to bidding and thinking hard before the opening lead.
