County declines road relief assessments case long road to court
Washington County commissioners refuse to act on requests to relieve landowners from special assessments along State Route 167 G. Hearings and investigations found no authority to grant relief. Past paving along the Marietta Athens County line used a similar plan with 10 percent charged to abutting property. Landowners seek cancellation and general taxation instead, noting Ohio River highway assessments were only 5 percent. The board favors not canceling the remaining assessments and argues for county taxation.
