Labor Leader Dies After Street Quarrel
Marion, March 6. George Jenkins 25 labor leader died at County Hospital from a gun wound suffered in a street quarrel Wednesday. Prosecutor Carter Patton said a second degree murder charge likely will be filed against Raymond McClung, jailed in connection with the shooting. Jenkins survived by a widow and three children. Wilmington March 19 A. P. Warden J Elmer Leach oversaw a brutal session at the Newcastle County Workhouse in which seven convicts each received 40 lashes across their bare backs. The 280 strikes were delivered with a three foot whip by a steel-ringed post. Prisoners were examined by a physician and fed afterward. Public flogging on Spite Sunday was common.
