Cincinnati health officials blamed Jamaica ginger for an epidemic of partial paralysis affecting Cincinnati and surrounding towns. Dr Williman H Peters said more than 24 cases were reported, mostly men over 35, with hospitals noting four fifths had admitted drinking "jake."
Columbus March 20 Officials of the State Department of Health said they had received no report of an undiagnosed paralysis type said to affect over 60 people in the southern part of the state and in one case cause death. The department, though vitally interested, will not pursue diagnosis unless the illness is shown to be communicable. Officials noted it is unclear if Jamaica ginger drink is involved.
Peters attributes most cases to a ginger extract based poison. He notes the alcohol involved is not ethyl or wood alcohol but a subtler spirit used in cosmetics. Government chemists study the compound causing paralysis to classify the toxin.
Eleven Kentucky towns report cases of partial paralysis after consuming Jamaica ginger extract as a beverage. Health officials call the situation alarming but avoid banning sales, noting most cases emerge a week after use and affect mostly the legs. Federal and state teams join in an inquiry to find a cure.
About 20 paralysis cases attributed to Jamaica ginger have been reported to physicians in Middletown. The first case appeared five days ago when an 86 year old man said he lost control of his limb after drinking the product.

Patrolman Dan Sandlin died six hours after a downtown confrontation that began when he and Patrolman Roy Crout told four occupants of a parked car to move on. A gunman shot Sandlin and fled. Crout wounded another, leading the trio to surrender while a fourth man escaped.

About 500 mothers of Ohio University students are expected in Athens for a three day program. Highlights include the skit Alice in Wonderland at Alumni Memorial Auditorium Friday and Saturday, the All Ohio Dinner at Hotel Berry with guest speaker Zona Gale Breese, and a Sunday address by Mrs. Breese. Washington reports Prohibition Commissioner J M Doran warned about a paralyzing cocktail made from isopropyl alcohol. He said isopropyl is related to wood and ethyl alcohols and should not be used as a beverage. The cases of paralysis in several states prompted the warning.

Wooster, March 20. Wayne County officials consider hiring a deep sea diver to search the pond at a country club northwest of Orrville for the body of Melvin Horst age 4 who disappeared months ago. Charles Hannah is linked to the pond in statements about the body. Officials previously searched the pond three weeks after his remark made while he was under twilight sleep.
Governor Myers Y. Cooper told the Ohio Chamber of Commerce in Cleveland that state business is improving and that prosperity requires active government action. Herman Throckmorton pleads not guilty in a Albany courtroom. He faces a statutory charge set for March 28 before Magistrate Porton. Throckmorton is released on a $600 bond as the case proceeds against Corette Joe Jonas.
