Adolf Hitler returned to Berlin by air amid a large ovation as Berliners welcomed the Fuehrer back to the capital of Greater Germany. His aides hurried to the Chancellery while bombing planes circled overhead and a cabinet session was anticipated that night.
Propaganda Minister Goebbels urged Berliners to join a mass celebration of Hitler's unionization of Germany and Austria. A Munich dispatch from the DNB says Hitler will speak in Graz and later in Austria ahead of the April 10 plebiscite. Treated with calm abroad, the anschluss is hailed as a German internal matter. Fifteen thousand torch bearers greeted Hitler in Munich, the largest crowd yet.
A fire of 350000 dollars gutted St Fidelis Seminary at Herman Pa seven miles east of Butler. Rev Bertrand Brookman ran through the three story building to wake the sleeping boys and Capuchin priests, averting a major catastrophe.
Detroit police probe a double homicide after two women were found strangled and tied to beds in their home. Victims are Monica Janonis 40 and Ursula Jakubowski 53, both residents of the city. Authorities pursue leads on a fiendish killer.
In Rome Premier Benito Mussolini told deputies that Italy and Germany would not go to war over Austria, calling war hopes childish. He said the Rome Berlin Axis is essential to Italian policy and defended frontier integrity amid claims of German pressure on Italy.
Vienna reports Maj. Emil Fey aged 52 former vice chancellor and minister of public security killed his wife and son then died by suicide. News notes other high profile Austrians also took their own lives including Friedrich Reitlinger, his daughter Jane and Dr Gustav Bayer with his daughter Helga. Prof Gabo Nobel and his wife also died by suicide in Vienna.
Ted Halley pleaded guilty before Judge W R White in Gallia County Common Pleas to stealing a purse from Mrs Anna Kohner containing 1800 dollars at a local beer parlor just before Christmas. He agreed to pay 200 dollars immediately and 20 dollars monthly until repayment, with 10 years probation and a warning of prison if he fails.
Seversky Aircraft in Farmingdale announces a design called the Super Clipper. It would carry 120 passengers and 16 crew across the Atlantic in 12 hours. The aircraft could be converted into a bomber with a 12 000 mile range and 300 mph cruising speed.
Ohio paid 31281 in pensions to the aged in 1937. The average monthly benefit was 22.60, up from 19.37 in 1936 and 15.14 in 1935. Recipients averaged 103,286 monthly, with 29,835 new applications, 27 percent approvals.
In Vienna officials report Hitler told Cardinal Innitzer that the church position would be handled calmly. With Austria largely Catholic, professors in the Vienna archdiocese welcomed Austria's inclusion in Germany and praised Hitler as the blacksmith of the Great Reich, pledging to cooperate in the new Germany.
New Rochelle New York police and state troopers searched the city for 12 year old Peter Levine who was kidnapped February 24 for a thirty thousand dollar ransom. Murray Levine the boy s father said he is still ready to pay the ransom and denied threats.
Governor Davey signed the Harter Bill granting 200 Ohio Penitentiary guards a $20 monthly raise and shorter working hours. Warden J C Woodward opposed the sick leave clause and Oakley Spaght objected to the reduced hours. The warden says shorter hours require more guards.
Reports say threats from the new Austrian Nazi regime to hold Kurt Schuschnigg Jr. as a pledge of his father’s discretion led former Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg to cancel plans to flee Austria after the Hitler coup. He was quoted preferring to face his accusers as the boy knelt in Vienna during a public dedication while his father was still in office.
Walter Barnes age 19 serving life in Ohio Penitentiary signed a statement admitting he fired the shot that killed Jeffersonville pool room proprietor Robert Lindsey last July 4. Everett Jones, 33, who testified he killed Lindsey, awaits execution March 25. Barnes says he tried to confess earlier but authorities did not believe him.
Washington Congressman Thomas A. Jenkins of Ohio opposes any plan to lower pottery tariffs. He warned Japanese pottery undercuts American makers, calling wages paid to Japanese workers about five cents per hour, and urged protection to preserve U S wage standards.
