President Roosevelt faced pressure from Illinois and Pennsylvania as they push for a new National Bituminous Coal Commission chair. Hosford, Jr. of Butler Pennsylvania resigns effective April 30 after four months of term amid internal strife over price schedules. States claim entitlement to appoints while others back differing candidates. The commission lists C E Ned Smith, Thomas F Haymond, Percy Tetlow, Walter Maloney, John C Lewis and Hosford as current members.

Lewis Burdette aged 44 died in a Gallipolis hospital from embolism. He leaves a wife and two small sons. Burdette was a telegraph operator at Kananga. Funeral services probably will be held on Thursday.

High Commissioner Paul V. McNutt advocated keeping U.S. control over the Philippines indefinitely rather than granting independence in 1946. He cited the Sino-Japanese situation as a reason for a realistic reexamination and warned withdrawal would turn the Philippines into a center of a war within a war in the Orient. McNutt spoke in a nationwide radio address.
Mrs. Maybelle McIntyre has filed in New York City courts to be administrator of the estate of her husband O. O. McIntyre who died intestate. The estate, about $115,000 subject to inheritance tax, largely in trust for the widow, includes New York and Gallipolis real estate held in her name.
State Conservation Commissioner Lawrence Woodell said five mobile work crews are speeding stream improvement projects in Clark Meigs Putnam Delaware and Franklin Counties. Each crew of five will be joined by Works Progress Administration and National Youth Administration labor. Up to 50 workers per crew.
