City authorities act at 2 pm to aid flood victims. Elk Club and Red Men hall open for relief. food and care provided. Hummel family rescued by Hal Woods near the hospital grounds after their house was swept off its foundation in Campbell addition amid rising waters.

Athens Flood Devastates City With Unparalleled Calamity

Severe flooding in Athens caused by the Hocking River rising after days of rain. Dozens of deaths reported and hundreds of homes submerged as citizens rescue families by boat. City faces thousands of dollars in damage and long rebuilding ahead.

Three Rescuers Die While Saving Flood Victims

In a flood along Richland Avenue about 11 15 rescuers led by Edward Swett and Col Beards braved violent currents to reach Albert Swett and Mrs Turner near Asy Lum Gates. The skiff capsized after strike by a swift cross current and all were swept away. The rescued woman died later despite medical aid. the rescuers perished at the scene. The surviving Albert Swett and Mrs Turner were carried to safety by helpers. Hundreds mourn as the tragedy is recounted.

Names listed include Otto Earth Miller Charlers Beards Bus Driver Edward Swett and painter Turner and Mrs Turner. Only Mrs Turner’s body has been recovered, pulled from the water by Frank Lowrey and taken to Newsom undertakers.

Plant halted by water shutoff in Athens visit

The Daily Messenger plant suffered a serious disruption after the water supply was shut off provoking delays. Officials said operations could not resume until AF visited Athens to address the issue.

Drowning of Otto Barth in Rescue Attempt

Otto Barth proprietor of the Barth Flouring Mills was drowned about 7 30 AM while aiding in a rescue on a flooded river. He and Carl Hibbard tried to reach the Dana home by rowboat using a rope tethered to the home. a chain failed causing the boat to capsize and Barth to be swept away. His wife witnessed the tragedy.
