Nelsonville York board eyes a new member at the next regular meeting through an interview process with the school community. Ernie Perkins resigns after four years, marking the second vacancy this year and prompting board President Micah to address the situation.
Perkins resigns effective immediately after filing a March letter with no stated reason. Former board member Steve Berry, who served 11 years, quit the day after the January organizational meeting. Perkins was absent at the February meeting and told The Messenger to see NY on page B6.
Roderick McDavis, 67, announced Thursday his retirement as Ohio University president after 12 years. He will leave June 30, 2017, at the end of his contract, with the Board of Trustees planning to name a successor in a Friday meeting. The 20th president oversaw campus expansions including new residence halls and the Baker University Center, and regional campus growth in Cleveland and Dublin.
Athens residents hope for a final pool season this summer but crews face a bleak prognosis. The pool must hold water after repairs, with Andrew Chiki noting the facility’s condition is worse than earlier reports. Crews continue to fill the pool to determine viability.
Chiki says the liner, built in the 1970s, has a major rip in the shallow end and many tiny holes. The estimated replacement cost is about $160,000, and the stalled liner firm will not patch it due to lapse in warranty. Even a patch may not stop water loss.
Ohio University plans a comprehensive master plan with new and renovated buildings at The Ridges and Greens Campus. A June board meeting will consider a fiscal year 2017 2018 funding resolution for projects including an 80 000 square foot addition to Clippinger Hall, undergoing a $42.6 million renovation, with phases spanning design to two years of construction.
