State Will Widen Union Avenue If Pomeroy Stakes Right of Way

Pomeroy village council discussed widening Union Avenue as part of Route 124 after right of way staking. State Highway Department will perform the work once the area is surveyed. Residents split on the project amid heavy coal truck traffic and narrow streets. Over 75 residents signed a petition protesting traffic control and truck use. The council asked Mayor Robinson to request a Marietta division engineer appointment to study the matter. Parking meters for two lots were debated. no action taken, with consideration of different meter types to allow longer parking with a single coin. Gienroy Ewing urged using meter funds to improve nearby vacant lots while retaining some free space. The council denied taxi licenses with four votes needed for approval. Manning Webster, Dor Schaefer, Dale Smith and Don Mullen favored. Wayne Swisher and Roy Jetring voted against. Webster also met with council on police pension and retirement for Chief Walter Wolfe, who is ill and hospitalized in Columbus. The council later approved Mayor Robinson’s February report showing receipts of 416.50.
