Volunteer ideas fail to gain traction in community recreation

A series of proposed youth centers in Athens failed due to lack of volunteer chaperones and apathy. Efforts by Mrs. Kenneth Kerr and Mrs. Mary Diles, plus space and location challenges at Elks Lodge and Lakeview Center, yielded about two years of activity. Rev. William G. Black advocates a YMCA style, nonprofit model led by a national institution rather than volunteers. A Logan pig production meeting is set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the courthouse auditorium with C. C. Bowen and Dave Miskell presenting marketing and economics.
