A1 volcano eruption near Villarrica in southern Chile triggered avalanches that destroyed Conaripe and threatened a 60 mile area affecting about 20000 people. Reports state seven deaths confirmed with others missing as rain washed out roads and bridges delaying rescue efforts.
Panama President Roberto Chiari said Johnson opened the way to a solution of the seven week crisis. A five member OAS mediation team held talks with Panama’s ambassador Miguel Moreno as the two sides moved toward settlement. Johnson said the 1903 canal treaty might need adjustment and that relations must be resumed without preconditions before changes are discussed.
Workers began recovering and identifying 85 victims from a Paradise Airlines Constellation crash near Lake Tahoe in Minden Nevada. The flight from San Jose California to the South Shore gambling and winter sports center crashed on a snow covered peak killing all 81 passengers and four crew. A bulldozer opened the path through rocks and snow for rescue teams to reach the site.
Mason County officials awaited autopsy results in the death of 49 year old Elizabeth Mae Robinson found along Owl Hollow Road. Husband Joseph Robinson was questioned and released. fire evidence noted two and three degree burns on knees and ankles. Funeral services set for Thursday at Stevens Funeral Home with burial at Ball Chapel Cemetery.
The Soviet Union has halted U S wheat purchases citing ample grain and will not buy more wheat for now, according to the New York Times. Only two U S sales totaling about 132.5 million dollars have been reported previously as Russia sourced wheat from other Western nations after crop failures.

Air Brigadier Harden Takriti was removed from his post as defense minister and deputy commander in chief of the Iraqi armed forces in a Monday night government shakeup in Damascus.

Phoenix funeral notices report former Columbus Dispatch editor George Smallsreed Sr died Monday at a Phoenix hospital. A Cleveland native, he began at the Dispatch in 1920 after graduating Capital University and retired in 1960 after 41 years with the newspaper.
In Catoosa County Georgia the Democratic committee ordered 29 candidates in the March 10 primary to make no speeches. A secret ballot of 17 candidates supported the ban and the committee may reconsider the measure. Actress Joanne Moriarty, 25, died Monday from an apparent sleeping pill overdose days after her marriage to actor Harry Parks, 26.
Goldwater planned a full day of appearances in New Hampshire a week before the GOP primary. Rockefeller prepared a Washington news conference and a New Hampshire swing to launch his final drive for the March 10 primary. California Governor Rockefeller and Goldwater already filed or planned to file their delegate papers and petitions, with candidates needing 13 702 valid signatures by April 3.
