West Virginia approves higher sulfur emissions at John Amos plant
Environmentalists criticized the decision by the West Virginia Air Pollution Control Commission to raise the hourly sulfur oxide limit at the John Amos coal plant from 32 000 to 45 000 pounds. The plant owned by Appalachian Power will burn coal up to 1 percent sulfur content and begin its third unit later this year. Dennis Spriggs of Citizens for Environmental Protection attacked the move, arguing WV coal is available at higher prices and urging safety considerations. Carl Beard of the commission warned they may require sulfur removal equipment if health questions arise.
