South Vietnamese General Warns of Enemy Buildup in Northwest

South Vietnamese Maj. Gen. Phan Van Phu said Hanoi has 10,000 troops massed for an attack on allied bases in Quang Tri province. He placed the force across 800 square miles, west of Dong Ha toward the Laotian border, near Highway 9 and the DMZ. He noted 6,000 infiltrated since May 1, with mortars rockets and small anti aircraft guns. He denied heavy guns across the DMZ, predicted heavy fighting but said bases would hold to protect populated areas. Fire Base Fuller was abandoned after a heavy barrage but reoccupied to aid reinforcements.
