Gambling? Not Likely Says Nevada Statistician

Reno AP report notes economist Bill Eadington of the University of Nevada says chances of getting rich gambling are slim. He cites an expected loss of about 5.50 per $100 on roulette over time, 25 per Reno bet, 1.5 percent for craps, and 2.5 percent for baccarat. Blackjack requires player skill for accurate assessment.

Gaming Industry Grows Despite High House Edge

Eadington notes a good player can face a 1 to 2 percent loss while a very poor player could lose 10 percent. Despite the odds, the gaming industry expands with gross taxable revenues exceeding 1 billion dollars in 1974, up 14 percent from 1973. He adds he rarely gambles, playing inexpensive blackjack when available.
