Lieutenant Dismissed From Army in Vietnam War Refusal

Lt. Richard B. Steinke, 27, Milwaukee, was sentenced to dismissal from the Army and forfeiture of pay for refusing to join a counter guerrilla unit in South Vietnam. He could face up to five years in prison. A 1962 West Point graduate, he cited opposition to U.S. policy and claimed the war was not worth one American life. Proceedings are subject to review by Lt. Gen. Albert Watson II and the Military Court of Appeals in Washington.

Missing Jackson Man Found Dead On Farm

A Jackson County farmer Harold Russ 57 was found dead on a farm Saturday with a shotgun blast to the chest. Coroner Charles Gaskill ruled death by own action. The body lay about one mile from the Russ home.

Bartlett Hospitalized After Surgery in Joplin

Mrs. C. H. Bartlett of Neosho Missouri reports her husband C. H. Bartlett underwent surgery at St. John’s Hospital Joplin and is recovering satisfactorily in room 422. Bartlett formerly worked for the Messenger and penned Over The Back Fence.

Area Man Killed In Jet Crash

Albany area resident Lance Cpl. Gail K. Haning was among 84 killed in a US Air Force C185 jet crash near El Toro California. Haning 23, engaged to Rosilia Gross, had planned to marry after discharge from the Marines. Other Ohioans named include Capt. William F. Cordell Jr. and Lance Cpl. James H. Brock. East Germany warned of travel permit sales for canal barges. Mariner 4 has traveled over 303 million miles toward Mars and will pass within about 6000 miles on July 14 taking 21 images and relaying data.

Transatlantic Service Begins By Comsat Early Bird
