Two explosions ripped through the My Canh floating restaurant on the Saigon River during dinner hour, killing 17 and wounding 24 with higher tolls feared. Witnesses say Americans and wealthy Vietnamese were among the casualties as security rounds up to curb nightlife.
Premier Nguyen Cao Ky ordered the closure of 36 Vietnamese language newspapers on July 1 provoking anger among editors and publishers. He announced July would feature two official papers for Saigon and the rest of the country amid heavy censorship by the National Psychological Warfare Ministry.
An Air Force Boeing C135 carrying 72 Marines from Camp Pendleton and 12 airmen from McGuire AFB crashed near El Toro California about 2:45 am while en route to Okinawa via Hawaii. All 84 aboard perished as wreckage was found in brushland north of the air base.

William Cody Kelly claims Ray Bliss fired him for an evening raid into the GOP finance director's office. Frank Kovac says Kelly and three aides broke into a locked desk and seized a missing list of $1000 contributor names and Goldwater campaign films. Temperature outlook mentions 3 to 7 degrees above normal with Cleveland Columbus and Cincinnati highs in the 80s.
East Germany vows to curb West Berlin links if four power permits for barge traffic are not extended beyond June 30. Transport Minister Edwin Kramer says 100 to 200 barges daily could be stopped starting July 1 and rail freight could see about a 20 percent rate increase with new border transit documents if Bonn and East Berlin fail to agree.

Governor James A. Rhodes and his official party camped at Old Man's Cave in Hocking State Park during a three county tour. About 200 attendees joined a campfire and singing event while the group visited Ash Cave Cedar Falls Rock House Cantwell Cliffs and Conkle's Hollow before a stop at Hocking Lake where Rhodes rode an amphibian with Logan police.
