Bridgwater Strike Talks Focus on Returning Workers
Frank Batdorff outlined a plan to invite nearly 300 Bridgwater tire mold plant workers to return on higher pay as negotiations with the United Auto Workers continue. A Tuesday decision day will gauge turnout, with protections for crossers and continued UAW recognition.
Athens Plant Faces Partial Shutdown Amid Labor Strife
Ratdorff says back to work efforts fail and enough workers don t return. American Brake Shoe plans to stay in tire mold making and may relocate if the move fails. The Athens plant could become a skeleton operation but remain open to hire. Bridgwater grew from 1946 to 1960 before becoming an American Brake Shoe division with about $1 million invested and payroll near $2 million last year. About 300 idle workers have lost roughly $500,000 in pay since the strike began, with benefits of $15 to $25 weekly depending on status.
