Athens City Suffers Severe Storm Damage With Widespread Debris
A noon twister lashed Athens causing snapped McGuffey Elms on the Ohio University campus, shattered windows, damaged roofs, and downed power lines at the Southern Ohio Electric substation on West State Street. Debris clogged East State Washington and Congress, traffic halted on Court Street, and businesses reported sign and awning damage. No injuries were listed. The storm dumped 0.34 inches of rain and lowered the temperature from 94 to 74. Plant crops suffered little overall while winds toppled corn. Authorities and city workers cleared streets and predicted more rain. The storm also damaged Canaanville Guysville and Coolville downstream of the Hocking Valley.
