A Spanish speaking man with a knife and a bottle marked explosives hijacked a Newark to Miami Eastern Airlines DCS8 with 89 aboard. His wife and teenage daughter accompanied him. The flight diverted to Havana before returning safely to Miami. It marked the 30th Cuba hijacking of the year and the third in a week.
Paris reports Maurice Schumann, longtime European integration advocate, becomes foreign minister in President Pompidou's new cabinet. Finance Minister Giscard d Estaing also labeled Europeanist, seen as start of a liberal shift in French foreign policy.
