The Sun day Creek Coal Co owned the mine, leased to George Vansickle and Ted Katzenbach, subleased to Bowers brothers who had just begun a railroad fuel contract. Insurance reportedly covers the loss.

A divorce action filed by Orling Davenport's wife is linked to his death by self inflicted gunfire. Davenport, 44, a carpenter, shot at his wife before possibly fatally wounding her and taking his own life in Akron.
