Is cooly a name for a people in Indian vernaculars
The passage notes that cooly or Koli may be a tribal name from Guzerat in western India, not a Tamil term. Etymologists link it to the Tamil kuli meaning hire or hireling, but Dr Murray’s dictionary shows early seventeenth century usage identifying a distinct Kuli or Koli tribe often employed by Europeans as bearers and carriers.
