President Nixon says he hopes for large troop withdrawals from Vietnam by year’s end and that inflation controls will begin to affect the economy in two to three months. He also discussed New York City elections, Safeguard missile defenses, and wiretap questions involving ML King.
President Nixon signaled a possible withdrawal of about 250000 American troops from Vietnam by year’s end if ground combat units are pulled out, following a 25000-troop first phase. He said a further decision would come in August depending on South Vietnamese training and Paris talks progress.
More than 500 North Vietnamese troops stormed the U S artillery base 15 miles north of Tay Ninh City. U S casualties were seven killed and 18 wounded with overall hostile losses at 72 killed in the Tay Ninh fighting. Air power pounded enemy concentrations nearby.
Batelle Memorial Institute finds state and local governments spend about seven million dollars on arresting trying and jailing intoxication offenses. In London Ohio Mario Andretti was ticketed for speeding near here and forfeited a $25 bond after failing to appear in court. In Miami Leslie Osman, 18, skipped his high school graduation after 12 years of perfect attendance.
