Athens to name Ted Jones police chief after residency rule dropped
Athens Civil Service Commission revoked its seven month old residency requirement clearing Ted Jones of Albany to become permanent chief. Chairman DeVeau said the move aims to attract top personnel and will guide a new rule limiting incoming officers to live within the Athens local range while current staff may stay. Jones has served as acting chief since April and will be certified for the post pending mayoral appointment.

Fuel Crisis Is Topic Of Gilligan Meeting
Gov. John J. Gilligan was to meet Ohio petroleum representatives to assess anticipated gasoline shortages and plan government action. Stations across the state cut back Sunday service, with Toledo area motorists feeling the pinch as Sohio stations closed Sundays. Union 76 urged Sunday closures. Gulf and Texaco guidance varied by brand as Marathon left allocations to dealers. Franklin County Prosecutor George Smith warned Sohio of court action if county supplies are further reduced, after Sohio pledged no more than 75 percent of last year’s county usage due to Lima refinery shutdowns in May.
