Lessons in 8B bridge problem from Coffin book

A fragment from a contract bridge article presents a three handed setup from George S. Coffin's novel work. North holds AKQJ10 and dummy cards are exposed before bidding while West and East defend. The example begins with South opening one club and a sequence of passes leads to a play.

South Should Bid Four Spades In This Rubber Bridge Hand

In a tricky rubber bridge hand with both sides vulnerable, South could see North’s exposed hand and consider four hearts. The optimal bid is four spades, not four hearts, as the play unfolds with roving trumps and forced ruffs. West’s defense and the spade lead yield chances for South to force a favorable line.
