In Gallipolis two brothers aged 15 and 13 drowned Sunday at a pond on the Gallipolis State Institute grounds near their home. Gerald Darnell, 13, swam 85 yards after being dared by Ronald, who would turn 16 in 12 days. Ronald cried for help. Gerald reentered the water to assist and both were pulled under. Fireman Harvey Brown retrieved them 70 minutes later. Ronald clutched his brother's ankles as they surfaced. Two 14-year-old playmates reported the incident to police. Coroner Donald R. Warehime ruled accidental drowning. Eye witnesses said first aid was too late.
