Bradbury, June 13. Witnesses attest to a season starter as Arthur Hendricks, a Bradbury dairy man, hunted turtles on Leading Creek. He thrust his hand into a hollow log, found a turtle and three catfish weighing 12, 8, and 6 pounds, and was bitten on the hand by the turtle.
The Athens City Council unanimously approved an ordinance banning sale of all beer and intoxicants from midnight to 5 am at a special meeting Tuesday night. A second ordinance paving West State Street was adopted, and a prior measure closing midnight sales was modified to halt only intoxicants. The new rule also bans 3.2 beer to prevent evading the ban, as officials fear weaker beer could prompt stronger sales.
In Athens Magistrate Carl H. Porter fined Marshal Ward of Middleport 25 dollars and costs for operating a truck with wrong license plates. Fines were issued on Tuesday night after charges filed by state patrolman Clifford Misner. Long Run resident Clifford Misner was fined five dollars and costs by Magistrate Porter on Wednesday for operating a motor vehicle without lights, charged by State Patrolman W. B. Umpleby. Kansas City dispatch reports Dolly Elwell of Chicago, mother of two, died from a self inflicted bullet wound after months of brooding over her husband’s slaying for which she was exonerated. An unsigned note prompted a police search for children James six and John nineteen months, who were with her in a Kansas City hotel, not registered.
Japanese Vice-Consul Eimei Kuramoto, missing for about five days after a disappearance near Nanking, was found alive wandering an ancient cemetery on the edge of Shanghai. Chinese authorities conducted a house to house search as Tokyo warned Beijing that China would be held responsible for the incident.
POMEROY June 13 Deputy Sheriff Otho Tra arrested James Hendricks in Middleport after weeks on the run. Hendricks, under indictment for breaking and entering, pleaded guilty in common pleas court and was sentenced to the Ohio Penitentiary for one to 15 years.
Headlines report Britain opposing a proposed war debt payment in kind while police pursue a crazed assailant. Since May 30 a man has attacked five women with pistol and knife, including Rosemary Mansfield, 16, who was stabbed in the back. Other victims include Kathleen Parret, 15, struck on the head. Athens police announced a new fingerprint method to curb housebreaking and petty theft. The equipment allows prints to be lifted from wood metal and glass after dusting and will speed up identifying suspects. Ambridge Pa June 13 Three year old James Mauкe fell from a second story window and escaped serious injury but fractured the concrete sidewalk. The boy's father Clifton A Mauk was previously shot in the back in a hunting accident and physicians doubted his survival. Within three weeks Mark was back at work.
Classes at Athens Junior-Senior High started the summer term with 144 students enrolled. The five-day schedule runs daily through August 3.
June W David Lloyd George, 71 year old former prime minister of Great Britain, was believed to have a chill at his Surrey home. His physician ordered him confined to his room for several days to recover.
