Parents say the car zigzagged down Route 62 and struck the girl as she tried to escape. Two blood transfusions failed to save her.
Carlton Eugene Williams, 14, died Thursday in Portsmouth from a ruptured intestine after being struck by a baseball. The injury occurred during a game when he was hit in the abdomen.
Heat at about 100 degrees lingered in the Middle West as forecasters predicted a break by tomorrow. Rainstorms failed to arrive but winds shifting from the Southwest to the North offered a modest relief. the heat wave has been blamed for over 70 deaths in four days.
Athens County Commissioners were informed that the State Relief Commission approved a $29,983 June grant. Of this, $5,300 is for Nelsonville for June, while $1,266 for Nelsonville in May is not included. Total due Athens County under the approvals stands at $31,249 per a letter from E. O. Braught.

Two Jackson fathers clashed over their children's rock fight. R. R. Rice, 33, was shot in the back by Harry Howe, 44, both of Jackson. Rice lies in Holzer Hospital in critical condition from a 12 gauge shotgun wound. Howe is detained in Jackson with charges pending as sheriff notes Howe was struck by a rock.
Marietta notes Roger Mc Giffen aged 41, president of Marietta Commercial College and son-in-law of AFL President William Green, was in town yesterday. The Coshocton native and Democratic Congressional candidate for the Fifteenth District was reported during the visit.
In Los Angeles on June 9 10 Elliott Roosevelt disclosed his separation from Elizabeth Donner Roosevelt. The former couple will share custody of their seven month old son William Donner Roosevelt while Elliott’s whereabouts remained uncertain, with belief he resided in Nevada to establish residence.
Cleveland June 9. Walter Johnson, famed American League pitcher, was named manager of the Cleveland Indians succeeding Roger Peckinpaugh after the board of directors meeting. Johnson signs a two year contract covering the balance of this year and next, a surprise move after recent reverses for the club.
Jimmy Mattern departed Krasnoyarsk after a five hour stop for refueling and repairs, ending a near two day delay that ruined chances to beat the around the world distance record. He still aims to be the first to fly solo around the world.
Federal relief administrator Mary L. Hopkins announced Ohio will receive about 1.6 million dollars each month in unemployment grants through January 1, 1934. The $250 million federal fund will match state and local spending at two dollars of state funds for every one of federal aid.
Raymond Spuriach of Porter is held on a bad checks charge. S. S. Denny of Vinton says his name was forged on two five dollar checks cashed by Spuriach. Spuriach must serve six days of an old liquor law fine before arraignment.
Treasurer G. D. Gorham’s office finishes adding penalties on delinquent real estate accounts this week and extends time for payments. He estimates second half real estate collections could start in about two weeks with extensions from June 2 to July 20 or longer. Time extensions have been common in recent years, with Meigs County having a similar extension recently.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt boarded a chartered plane at Port Columbus at 6 m for Newark New Jersey on her Pacific Coast tour. The aircraft touched down at 5 43 p m and stopped briefly for breakfast before continuing the journey.
First National Flower Shut-in Day will be observed tomorrow in Athens and nationwide with 6,000 florists participating. Flowers will be delivered free to hospital patients crippled children elderly residents and others confined at home. Connett's in Athens will handle deliveries and asks for notices of shut-ins.
Wheeling West Virginia officials announce that one thousand workers will return to jobs at the Plante plant of the Wheeling Steel Corporation this month signaling resumed production after a shutdown.
