In Athens the G A R led Decoration Day ceremonies at state hospital necropolis and two local cemeteries. Private Dalzell of Washington spoke eloquently on the Civil War, recounting losses of over 300000. Veterans, drum corps, schoolchildren and citizens marched in procession and salutes were fired as flowers and tears honored the heroic dead.

Powell of Toledo officiated after the death of the bride s brother. The couple plan a honeymoon in Athens and a bridal trip before renting rooms with Mrs. Foster on Mulberry street. The bride formerly worked at the Bank of Athens and the groom is employed by the Athens Lumber Company.

Death of Matthew Scott Veteran Civil War Soldier
Matthew Scott died suddenly Sunday evening at his Plains home at age sixty. He contracted pleurisy and fever while living in a shanty along the Hocking river to save time for planting corn. Exposure is believed to have caused the illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Salem church with interment there. He served gallantly in Company A, 92d O. V. I., in the Civil War, fighting at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge among other engagements and marching with Sherman to the sea.

Died of Lung Trouble George Gates 30
George Gates aged thirty died Thursday at his Trimble home after a two week illness of lung trouble. The body was taken to Clarks Chapel for funeral and interment, with Rev. L U Haddox presiding. He was the son of Jacob Gates, a Harmony native now in York township, and he served in the Spanish American War with Company 5. An escort of ex-members accompanied the remains to the cemetery. Pallbearers were Thomas Davis J D Gist Charles Kinkade Eber Sands C E Cameron and Mac Cochran.

Passenger train wreck near Sharpsburg Junction shocks Amesville
Passenger train No 1 on the M C C Ry jumped the track west of Sharpsburg Junction about 10 15 am Tuesday. Conductor William Riley and Engineer Olmvier Foster survived with minor injuries while Fireman Daniel Bosworth sustained head bruises. The wreck blocked the line near a tunnel and required T O C wrecking crews from Corning to restore service by Wednesday. Heavy rains have left the road bed in poor condition with many trestles needing repair.
