President Roosevelt proposes a 500 million emergency program to aid drought relief efforts with food beef and works projects. Rainfall improves conditions but fields remain parched as weather observers note limited relief and ongoing water shortages for farmers.
Steve Huntley a 74 year old resident of Berlin Cross Roads Jackson County was found dead near his farm home with his head crushed and several hundred dollars missing. A stranger was seen nearby earlier and bloodhounds failed to track the trail. Sheriff Hatfield and deputies examined the scene as the case opened with no weapon recovered.
Pittsburgh reports plans for a march on Washington by steel workers who say they were discriminated against for union activity. The march may start tomorrow unless President Roosevelt signs the Wagner Bill or a similar measure banning company unions. Hugh S. Johnson seeks a steel labor relations plan akin to the automobile industry. Alfred P. Sloan Jr., Alvan Macauley and Walter Chrysler visited the White House amid steel strike tensions.
In Patterson Herzog Lime and Stone Quarry turmoil left Pearl Devore with head injuries. About 38 former workers were ordered to court after a week-old strike involving 2000 quarrymen demanding union recognition shorter hours and higher wages.
Columbus June 5 more reductions promised by the State liquor control department follow yesterday’s cuts. Director John A Hughes said next Monday pints and quarts of eight brands will drop. Reductions reach up to 60 cents a quart and 50 cents a pint on several brands.
Athens County to receive 818 934 in June relief funds to finish unfinished CWA projects. H M Spang relief director coordinates with township trustees and school boards to provide labor while officials supply materials machinery and supervision. About 12000 in cash payments to workers with remaining funds for administrative subsistence gardens transient relief and direct relief. Also 11827 allotted to continue FERA projects and a family recovery program providing stock chicks seed and farming support funded by the Federal government. On farm relief farmers sign agreements to work for provided goods and more livestock may be added this month.
Ohio University economist A C Gubitz told Ath�ens Kiwanis Club at Berry Hotel that the nation faces a problem of distributing and consuming goods as well as producing them. He warned that a ten percent foreign market for American products has vanished with national growth and urged finding new outlets or regulating output with heavy taxes on profits. He predicted continued government regulation of production and consumption regardless of New Deal changes.
A grass fire near Shell Petroleum tanks on West Union Street near the railroad tracks lit about 11 25 this morning. Firemen used chemicals and brush broome to extinguish the blaze started by burning oily rags. no damage reported. Des Moines notes report a June 5 GOP governor primary lead for Dan Turner over Robert W Colefield.

Los Angeles reports Lucius F. Payne and his 21-year-old son in a police awaiting meeting after the son confessed to killing his mother and brother with an axe. The youth is described as mentally unstable by Dr. James T. Fisher an alienist.
Underwood Indiana reports three youthful bandits terrorized the area last night. They kidnapped 18 year old Ralph Shields and forced him to drive toward Salem in his car as deputies plus 200 citizens pursue. Gilbert Shield was slugged when he attempted to intervene. Bloodhounds and posse members sweep knobby hills west of Underwood for the other two bandits.
Ilion New York June reports nearly two thousand Remington Rand typewriter plant workers hit by a three week walkout. At the Syracuse plant about 200 reported for work while an estimated crowd of around one thousand gathered. eight unarmed policemen stood by as 18 workers returned.
An accidental dynamite blast near Norman Oklahoma killed seven members of a Petty Geophysics Engineering Company party. The group, an engineering crew, was preparing to use charges for seismic explorations when the explosion occurred eight miles southeast of the city.
Frank Jackson and Wilford Clark pleaded guilty to intoxication charges before Mayor Len B. McCune on Monday and were fined eight dollars plus costs each. Both paid the fines and costs. Ralph Brown pleaded not guilty and was to be tried before the mayor tonight.

Toledo's automotive strike ended quietly as Electric Auto-Lite Logan Gear and Bingham plants reopened under union and management terms. Strikers return to Auto-Lite immediately while Logan Gear and Bingham reinstate this afternoon. full reemployment within a week with maintained seniority and no discrimination. Wage increases range from five to four percent with women in higher brackets. About 100 workers participated, roughly half women.
Washington June 8 AP Senate debates a tariff bill to place a lead back of quarter of the nation money. Filibuster pressure and cross of gold rhetoric cloud the session as Wagner labor disputes housing tariff and silver measures aim for action this session. Senate passed the bill 5 31 with Democratic support and no Republican changes. The White House expects swift House approval of Senate amendments.
Fireworks and free acts for the Athens County Fair have been contracted. The fair runs August 21 to 24 with improvements at the grounds. Hudson Fireworks Display Co. of Hudson provides the fireworks. Entertainment includes accordion quartet and girl roller skaters performing twice daily. Three days of sulky races plus new wire fencing and a pedestrian gate are planned. Premium list expected by July 4.
CORBEIL Ont June 5 five nurses attended the five tiny Dionne sisters today as they began their eighth day in time. Constant attention is given the infants all of them below normal weight and attitued with an attack of jaundice.
City Council passed a unanimous amendment allowing all Athens restaurants to remain open after midnight while prohibiting the sale of beer and intoxicating liquors after that hour. The change affects establishments previously restricted from serving stronger drinks after midnight, cited as necessary to protect food business. Legal representatives for hotels and restaurants argued the original ordinance was unfair and would curb dining business.
Fifteen hundred subsistence gardens covering about an acre each are being grown in Athena County with seed from the relief department. H. M. Spang says relief officials oversee the effort. Gardens diversify with potatoes cabbage tomatoes beans corn beets peas radishes carrots onions lettuce and more. Volunteers assist, and good crops are expected if rain arrives soon. Surplus produce will be canned to provide winter provisions.
Bale of $22 500 bonds for relief purposes in Athens County has been authorized by the county commissioners and the State Relief Commission. State Tax Commission approval is expected within days. The issue is the second of bonds from the county share of the selective sales tax to retire. The first issue was $55 000, about $1 000 remaining. Money from the new sale will be used to fund relief programs at the discretion of the commissioners and the relief commission.
A cabinet committee report on river improvements rejects the Beaver and Mahoning Rivers canal plan to supply the Youngstown steel district with Ohio River water transportation. The adverse recommendation highlights the project’s lack of viability.

The lease hinges on state aeronautics securing a tile drain closure along the land’s full width separating Rowland and Totman properties.
City workmen under director C W Crows grade Boyd Street on North Hill to reroute drainage away from homes. An 11 foot driveway will be hindered as curbs are set back on West State Street between Court and Congress. Block widened to 42 feet with gravel fill before complete street reconstruction from Court to Lancaster in about 60 days. A concrete base and new bricks will be installed.
Two delinquent tax judgments were entered in Athens County Common Pleas Court by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Gordon B. Gray. A $700.94 claim against Ralph A. Dalton and a $143.14 claim against Harrison Steen led to a sheriff's sale of property involved in both cases.
Three sections of state highways in the district were oiled today. Routes 36 between Athens City site and Union, Route 30 west of Hebbardsville, and Route 3 South between Guysville and Coolville received oil treatment.
