Ships Collide in Sea Disaster Off Pearl Harbor

A collision between the Australian carrier Melbourne and the US destroyer USS Frank E. Evans near the Philippines left 56 missing and one dead. Melbourne transported 216 survivors to safety, while rescue teams searched the area, with the carrier continuing toward Manila.

Vietnam war weekly toll shows small gain for enemy

Saigon AP reports that total American war deaths in action last week were about 2 to 300, similar to the prior week, while South Vietnamese deaths and enemy losses fell sharply. North Vietnamese totals reached at least 2,637 with 55 miles northeast of Saigon and northwest of the capital. The week’s major clashes in War Zones D and C involved Air Cavalry units and heavy bombardment as US forces sought caches and possible headquarters. casualties included 29 North Vietnamese and five Americans in D, plus one North Vietnamese and two American deaths in C.

Fire Kills 12 in Kansas City Apartment Blaze

An early 2 a.m. fire in a three story brick building at 40th and McGee killed 12 people, six of them members of one family. The 39 unit complex housed 80 to 100 residents and injured included five month old Harry Smith and his father Lawrence Smith in serious condition. Fire officials blamed an abandoned elevator shaft. 11 fire companies fought the flames for about two hours.

In Columbus Ohio lawmakers who toured the Ohio Penitentiary gave sharply different assessments after briefing with newsmen. A reporter accompanying the 244 hour walk through the prison said inmates provided little information.
